ERFA, the European Rail Freight Association is looking for a Technical Officer to join its team in Brussels.

Our mission is to represent the interests at EU level of private and independent rail freight companies from across Europe. Our aim is to get customers to choose rail freight as the mode of choice and to ensure rail plays a central role in the EU’s sustainable transport vision. Creating the right legal, operational and technical framework for competitive rail services is central to the work we do.

The role of the Technical officer will in the main be to liaise with the Agency for European Railways (ERA) and to follow key technical/operational issues dealt with in ERA Working Groups. ERTMS, Single Safety certificate, Noise mitigation measures are only some of the topics that have an important business impact on ERFA’s members and for which we need to influence EU/ERA decisions and provide contributions.

The new recruit will work in a small and dynamic team and will benefit from one-to-one coaching from our departing Technical Manager. The role is an opportunity to gain expertise on key interoperability and safety issues and to become a main point of contact for ERFA’s members.

Key areas of responsibility

  • Organising the lobbying activities for our association on the European level primarily in the field of technical/operational matters in particular related to rail interoperability and safety;
  • Represent ERFA in (Expert) Working Groups;
  • Monitoring related EU topics; writing short reports for internal use; collecting information and transferring it into newsletters and briefings;
  • Support of Members on questions related to “technical/operational” issues;
  • Drafting and writing position papers;
  • Liaising and exchanging information with relevant external stakeholders (European Union Railway Agency, European Commission, European Parliament and other institutions and stakeholders);
  • Organising meetings and events.

Qualifications and requirements

  • University Degree, preferably in engineering, political sciences/international relations, economics, law;
  • Experience in the rail (freight) sector is an asset;
  • Proficiency in English; additional languages, particularly German, an asset;
  • Knowledge of the European decision making and legislation process;
  • A high level of professionalism and self-motivation;
  • Strong communication and social skills.
