ROLE

Luminate is seeking an Advisor, Campaigns & Media to join the Luminate Strategic Initiatives [LSI] team. This is an exciting opportunity to support LSI’s work focusing on addressing digital threats to democracy created by the surveillance commerce business model of Big Tech. LSI takes an integrated approach to addressing the harms of Big Tech via strategic litigation, policy-change, campaigns and strategic communications and building ecosystems of organisations that can challenge various aspects of Big Tech harms.

The Advisor will support the development and implementation of campaigns and media grant-making, strategy and tactics that helps build public understanding of Big Tech’s harmful business model and to mobilise citizens to demand digital media that put public interest before profit. The Advisor is a mid-level position at Luminate, that will report to the Director of Campaigns & Media. We expect the incumbent to have pre-existing experience of working in media or campaigning, specifically on issues relating to data rights and digital threats to democracy at an intermediate level.

The Campaigns and Media team’s priorities are:

  • Grants to a diverse range of organisations that are researching the harms of Big Tech to the information ecosystem and amplifying solutions to a general audience;
  • Supporting different types of story-telling – such as documentary, podcasts, TV series, film, etc.;
  • Supporting a networked approaches to mobilisation through coalitions;
  • Engaging with high profile individuals and other progressive movements to widen the number of organisations working on the harms of Big Tech.

To be successful in this role, the ideal candidate will need to manage grants and contracts, have a deep understanding of and keep up to date with the key developments relevant to the issue area of the harms of Big Tech, the ability to lead and work well with coalitions, and experience maintaining digital assets such as websites, newsletters and social media channels.

This position will be based in Brussels, Belgium or Paris, France and will report to the Director, Campaigns & Media based in London. The successful candidate must have a right to work in either Brussels or Paris (the relevant country of residence). The salary and benefits offered are competitive and on par with other European philanthropies.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Advisor will have a range of responsibilities, all connected to LSI’s goals of supporting the development and implementation of Campaigns and Media strategies.

They will include the following:

  • Supporting grant-making to partner organisations;
  • Supporting and helping coordinate partners in the implementation of Europe-wide and global campaigns;
  • Identifying opportunities and creative ways to shift public narratives on Big Tech and rally public opinion for change;
  • Helping translate policy and advocacy positions into public messaging;
  • Drafting and supporting the development of high-quality advocacy, media, and communications materials;
  • Maintaining a broad network of journalists, and communications and design agencies and vendors in service of LSI’s campaigns and partners;
  • Coordinating with other teams within Luminate.

This role includes some travel, so ideally, the candidate would have flexibility to travel internationally [estimated 20-30 percent].  

EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

  • Experience in media or campaigning, especially on issues relating to data rights and digital threats to democracy;
  • Demonstrated experience engaging and mobilising the public and the media on complex issues;
  • Experience in working in coalitions or coordinating a large range of organisations;
  • Strong writing and briefing skills including the ability to simplify complex messages for a wide variety of audiences;
  • Demonstrated understanding of the importance of comprehensive strategies that combine policy expertise, research, campaigning, media and public outreach, and others;
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail;
  • Experience with managing multi-format and multilingual content creation as well as experience leveraging media for impact;
  • Excellent communications and people skills, with experience of working with a diverse range of people and willing to acknowledge and unlearn biases;
  • A high degree of comfort working in a fast-moving environment;
  • Solution-oriented and creative;
  • Fluency in one or more major European languages other than English;
  • Experience in grant-making is desirable.
