We are looking for experienced economists with combined experience in macroeconomic and financial analysis, research, and economic policy issues. The selected candidates will work in the Economic and Market Analysis team and contribute to economic and financial analysis, country and market monitoring, and research for euro area countries, the euro area as a whole, and international economics and finance. S/he will report to the Head of Economic and Market Analysis.

The European Stability Mechanism (“ESM”) is the permanent crisis resolution mechanism for euro area countries. It has launched five financial assistance programmes, provided financial support, monitored repayment capacity, and engaged with partner institutions for programme design in areas of financial interest. The ESM has recently received an expanded mandate from European leaders, which it will implement in the months and years ahead. The ESM will have a stronger role in financial stability risk analysis and the design of policy measures in programmes jointly with the European Commission.

The ESM is a unique place to work with around 180 individuals committed to making a difference to the future of the euro area. It recruits talented professionals of any nationality from both the private and public sector.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Monitor and analyse macroeconomic and financial market developments in euro area member states, the euro area, and the global economy;
  • Produce high-quality research on relevant topics related to the ESM role as a crisis resolution organisation;
  • Build and apply analytical tools and models that provide insights on economic and financial developments and risks in euro area countries and the euro area;
  • Contribute to policy design and to the translation of analytical results into operational action;
  • Produce notes and reports that contribute to the ESM‘s monitoring and analysis of economic and financial developments in member countries and the euro area;
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues in other divisions and departments, including in funding and investment operations to exploit analytical synergies of economics, finance, and market intelligence;
  • Support ESM’s interactions with the economic and research teams of peer organisations in the euro area and globally, in particular with the European Commission, the ECB and the IMF, as well as researchers and analysts in academia and financial market institutions (such as banks).

KEY BACKGROUND & EXPERIENCE

  • Graduate at PhD or Master level, preferably in economics, finance, or econometrics;
  • An academic publication track record is a plus;
  • At least 5 years’ experience in macroeconomic and financial analysis, research, and policy work;
  • Excellent knowledge of macroeconomics, including quantitative/econometric skills;
  • Experience in monitoring financial markets is a plus;
  • Fluency in English, including very good drafting skills;
  • IT literacy.

Contract duration: Two or three-year fixed term contract, with possibility of extension
