EuroMed Rights is looking to recruit an experienced, dynamic professional as Communication Director for its Communication Department, based in its Brussels office.

About EuroMed Rights

EuroMed Rights was founded in January 1997 in response to the Barcelona Declaration of November 1995 and the establishment of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership (EMP). It is the coordinating body of about 80 human rights organisations and institutions as well as individuals from over 30 countries. EuroMed Rights’ organisational structure is built on a general assembly, an executive committee, working groups and a secretariat.

Rooted in civil society the Network seeks to develop and strengthen partnerships between NGOs in the EuroMed region, i.e. networking aimed at strengthening the capacity of members to act and interact within the context of the region and the Barcelona process and other EU-Arab cooperation frameworks.

Position summary

The Communication Director plays an integral role in the development of EuroMed Rights’ Communication Strategy Plan. S/he leads and participate in the execution of that plan, working with the existing communication team. S/he has the overall responsibility of shaping and managing the communications of the organisation. Being part of the management team, s/he will report to and work under the supervision of the executive director.

Essential position functions

Communication strategy, vision and leadership

  • Be a member of EuroMed Rights’ management group and advise on management issues;
  • Advise the Executive Committee on communication issues, both internal and external, and contribute to establishing and implementing EuroMed Rights’ overall communication strategy;
  • Actively cultivate and manage media relationships to ensure coverage of EuroMed Rights’ activities;
  • Keep track of communication opportunities in relation to international/regional bodies, primarily the EU, EU member states and when relevant, the UN, the Arab League and other international/regional bodies as well as states of the EuroMed region – coordinate and suggest communication actions in this regard;
  • Supervise the work of EuroMed Rights’ Communication team and ensure proper work distribution;
  • Ensure the smooth running and positive developments of EuroMed Rights’ communication activities, both internally, towards its members, and externally;
  • Oversee all publications to ensure their alignment with EuroMed Rights’ strategy and values;
  • Oversee, or execute as needed, the development of all print and branded materials;
  • Oversee, or execute as needed, the development of electronic communications.

Profile, Skills and Background

  • A university degree in journalism, communications or similar experience;
  • Proven experience and network within media work, as a journalist and/or media officer (min. 5-10 years);
  • Experience of management, preferably in a NGO environment;
  • Good understanding of political and human rights issues in the EuroMed region;
  • Fluent knowledge (written and oral) of English and Arabic or French and Arabic, and at least good command of respectively French or English;
  • Good skills to establish and maintain contacts with NGOs, government representatives and media;
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Keen attention to details.
