Cefic, the European Chemical Industry Council, is both the forum and voice of the European chemical industry. It aims to maintain and develop a prosperous chemical industry in Europe by promoting the best possible economic, social and environmental conditions to bring benefits to society.

The chemical industry is a € 500+ billion industry, providing over 1 million direct jobs and nearly 2.5 million indirect jobs in Europe. The chemical industry is the “Industry of Things”. The industry's products are essential to 95% of everything manufactured: hygiene, health, mobility, construction, computers and electronics all rely on the chemical industry. The sector is also critical to meeting future needs, such as developing energy sources or managing scarce resources. The chemical industry is essential for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Cefic is located in Brussels to represent the industry vis-à-vis EU institutions and involve member federations and companies in European advocacy. We employ more than 150 people.

In order to strengthen its LRI Research Program, Cefic is looking for a (m/f): LRI Program Manager (LRI = Long Range Research Initiative).

Mission of the role:

As LRI Program manager, you will work with industry and external scientists and stakeholders (academia, governments, EU Institutions) for designing and implementing research projects to improve the assessment of the impact of chemicals on human health and on the environment. You will also be responsible for the communication of the LRI program and its results. You will report to the Executive Director Innovation.

You will:

  • Shaping and managing the work of the various CEFIC Long Range Research Initiative working groups;
  • Ensuring integration with other CEFIC groups, academia and regulators working on related topics (e.g. strengthening risk assessment, modern technologies to assess the impact of new materials and products, nanomaterials, endocrine disruptors, animal welfare, intelligent testing and assessment, impact of complex environments on health);
  • Creating an effective working relationship with eminent academia and regulators;
  • Ensuring dialogue and effective communication of the LRI work to stakeholders;
  • Linking with related activities at member state, European and global level to ensure high quality of research and interpretation of research results.

Can you make the difference?

The successful candidate will be a highly experienced professional who demonstrates the following experience and competencies:

  • Academic degree in science and proven track-record of involvement in research activities, with strong background in toxicology and/or ecotoxicology;
  • At least 10 years of experience in R&D management in industry, trade associations and/or research institutions (academia or contract research organizations). Strategic thinking and experience in managing project portfolio’s;
  • Ability to prioritise projects and leverage research results in the context of the evolving regulatory/policy environment at the science/policy interface;
  • Proven project/program management skills, including planning and budgeting;
  • Ability to work with specialists from a broad range of backgrounds (technical and non-technical). Strong interpersonal and influencing skills and the ability to network and build relations in an international context;
  • Ability to communicate research projects and results to scientists and non-scientists;
  • Teamwork attitude;
  • Proficiency in English (written/oral).
