BEUC, the European Consumer Organisation, is looking for a legal research officer to reinforce its Legal and Economic Department, in particular on files related to consumer rights in the digital economy. The main task is to undertake research and to co-ordinate our work on a project to modernise EU consumer law (2-year contract).

The tasks of the position will include:

  • co-ordinating the implementation of a project on the modernisation of consumer law in the data economy;
  • carrying-out research on existing gaps of consumer law with regard to unfair commercial practices in the data economy and the need to protect consumers’ autonomy;
  • supporting the implementation of all project objectives, including consultations and organisation of events;
  • working with an academic advisory board to discuss how consumer law can be adapted to provide for more effective protection in the digital economy;
  • helping develop an interdisciplinary approach to consumer and other relevant areas of law, such as data protection and competition law and their enforcement;
  • analysing and writing a report about relevant academic literature and studies;
  • supporting BEUC teams in their work on files related to consumer law and digital policies;
  • maintaining and developing contacts with academics, EU institutions and other relevant stakeholders.

The main qualifications we are looking for are:

  • an advanced University degree in Law ideally with a specialisation in consumer law; (a specialisation in ICT law would also be an advantage);
  • at least 3 years of professional experience working on EU consumer and/or ICT law;
  • a research job experience in an academic institution would be an advantage;
  • excellent analytical and writing skills in English; knowledge of other EU languages would be an advantage;
  • a proven ability to understand, appreciate and explain complex legal questions;
  • a demonstrable interest in new technologies, articulating and defending the consumer interest and ensuring a fair digital transformation of our society;
  • ability to work well with people from diverse backgrounds;
  • team player; ability to perform under pressure; well organised.
