Energy Expert Business Development Manager

The Energy Expert/Business Development Manager (BDM), as a member of the Climate Change and Sustainable Energy team of Stantec’s Business Development team, will actively contribute to:

  • The identification and investigation of new business opportunities and the follow-up of a pipeline of projects at various stages of maturity in the field of sustainable energy, within and outside the European Union, in the context of programmes financed by: (i) international financial institutions (IFIs) such as the European Commission (in particular EuropeAid), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the African Development Bank (AfDB), etc.; and (ii) bilateral donor organisations such as the French Development Agency (AFD), the German international cooperation agency (GIZ), etc.; Amongst others, this part of the work will include market assessment studies, establishment of partnerships/consortium arrangements and preparation of tender documents;
  • The drafting of technical offers and preparation of budgets for sustainable energy projects financed by IFIs and donor organisations, in the context of international tenders as well as framework contracts;
  • The identification and selection (based on an assessment of their CVs and some direct exchanges) of suitable energy experts to be mobilised for participation in planned or ongoing energy-related projects.

In addition, the Energy Expert will contribute to project implementation in the form of:

  • “Direct” technical work, conducted in the capacity of short-term expert for sustainable energy projects (or other projects with a sustainable energy component) managed by Stantec, with the aim of maintaining and further develop his/her technical skills and other competences;
  • Quality control work, through the review of specific outputs produced by experts engaged in energy-related projects;
  • Technical advisory work, involving the briefing of and/or provision of technical support to experts engaged in energy-related projects.

Indicatively, business development-related work will account for 65% of the Energy Expert’s working time, and project implementation work 35% (excluding the time dedicated to training/capacity building).

The Energy Expert will be a member of Stantec International Development’s Centre of Excellence in Climate Change and sustainable energy.

Requested profile

Applicants should as a minimum have the following qualifications and skills:

  • An Engineering or MSc degree in a field related to energy;
  • Five years of professional experience in the field of sustainable energy (e.g. renewable energy, energy efficiency, on-grid and off-grid electrification, network planning and management, energy market regulation, design of tariffs and other economic incentives, energy project design, energy project financing, energy service tendering and contracting, energy market studies, digitalisation, …);
  • A strong commercial orientation, with motivation and interest in contributing to business development;
  • Excellent communication skills, with motivation and interest in regularly interacting with existing and potential customers, partners, experts, … and of course colleagues;
  • Ability to work as a committed team member;
  • Ability to meet deadlines and at times work under strict deadlines;
  • Excellent knowledge of English, and a good working knowledge of French (both spoken and written).

The candidate should also be willing and available to occasionally carry out missions abroad, including in developing countries, of a duration from a few days to a few weeks.

In addition, the following qualifications and skills will be considered an asset:

  • An additional degree, diploma or certificate in a field related to business, economics, project management, international cooperation, policy analysis, and/or financing of energy or other infrastructure projects;
  • Professional experience in any of the above-mentioned fields;
  • Good drafting skills, notably from the perspective of being able to structure information in a logical manner, convey clear messages following a logical sequence, synthesise information without distorting it, and write in a grammatically correct form and with good spelling;
  • Additional language skills (notably Spanish or Portuguese, but other languages may be relevant as well considering the global outreach of Stantec-managed projects).
