Junior Policy Officer Working on North Africa-Europe Relations

(40 hours/week)

ECDPM - European Centre for Development Policy Management

Maastricht, Netherlands

Are you interested in developments in North Africa, the EU’s neighbourhood policy and migration? We are looking for an Arabic-speaking junior policy officer with experience and expertise related to the North Africa region to strengthen our team in Maastricht.

Who are we?

The European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM) is a leading independent think tank that wants to make policies in Europe and Africa work for inclusive and sustainable development. We have two offices: in Maastricht (the Netherlands) and Brussels (Belgium).

Our more than 60 staff members from over 25 countries worldwide provide independent research, advice and operational support to policymakers, advisors and practitioners in Europe, Africa and beyond. Our focus is on EU foreign policy and policies related to conflict, migration, governance, sustainable food systems, regional integration, business, finance and trade.

About our work on North Africa-Europe relations - including migration

In the past years, ECDPM expanded its work in North Africa. This reflects the growing prominence of the region in EU external action from a geopolitical, stability and security perspective as well as regarding the question of migration. We are interested in political, economic and institutional reform dynamics within the various countries of the region and in their evolving relations with the European Union. We explore ways and means to promote more integrated approaches to migration – beyond EU-driven security concerns.

What will you be doing?

As a junior policy officer working on North Africa-Europe relations and migration, you will:

  • Help us conduct research and analysis on North Africa, EU neighbourhood policies and migration;
  • Help us communicate the findings of our research and analysis;
  • Assist in the overall coordination of ECDPM’s North Africa task force;
  • Help us organise events;
  • Help us build, expand and maintain our strategic networks and partnerships;
  • Help us develop funding proposals.

You are based in our Maastricht office and will primarily be part of the migration team.

Who are we looking for?

Our ideal candidate:

  • Has a master’s degree;
  • Has at least two years of relevant work experience;
  • Has a keen interest in development issues and particularly in migration;
  • Is familiar with the North African region and its relations with Europe;

  • Has excellent writing, editing, analytical and synthesis skills, and knows how to structure arguments and present options to policymakers in a non-partisan way;
  • Has good communication skills;
  • Has an excellent command of Arabic, French and English;
  • Has an entrepreneurial attitude, good organisational skills and a commitment to quality, and is a team player;
  • Knows how to towards tight deadlines and effectively balance conflicting demands;
  • Enjoys working in a dynamic and multicultural environment.

What do we offer you?

  • A one-year contract for 40 hours a week;
  • A salary ranging between € 38,000 and € 45,000 gross per year depending on experience, including a holiday allowance and end-of-year allowance;
