EuroMed Rights is looking to recruit a skilled and motivated Advocacy and Training Officer to join its Brussels-based Advocacy Department, under an unlimited duration contract.

DESCRIPTION OF TASKS

The Advocacy and Training Officer will work under the supervision of the Advocacy Director; he/she will undertake the following tasks:

EU advocacy and programme support:

  • Support advocacy actions towards the EU and Member States on Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, in partnership with EuroMed Rights Tunis-based office and related programmes; support EU advocacy on countries not covered by specific programmes;
  • Facilitate access of EuroMed Rights members to EU institutions, Member States, and when relevant to UN bodies, in close cooperation with the country and thematic programme officers;
  • Represents EuroMed Rights upon delegation of the Advocacy Director.

Monitoring and information-sharing:

  • Monitor the EU and Member State agendas to share information that is relevant for other programmes and projects, in particular those covering Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia;
  • Maintain contact with international and regional human rights organisations to gather intelligence and identify advocacy opportunities.

Training and capacity-building:

  • Develop a comprehensive training plan on EU advocacy for EuroMed Rights and its member organisations, to increase knowledge and build capacities to conduct advocacy effectively;
  • Overall responsibility to update, develop and promote EuroMed Rights advocacy training material.

Coordination and reporting:

  • Supervise the Advocacy Intern, take part in their recruitment, assign them with tasks linked to the above activities, and evaluate their performance;
  • Support the Advocacy Director in implementing EuroMed Rights’ monitoring and evaluation system;
  • Ensure proper narrative and financial reports of activities when relevant;
  • Apply EuroMed Rights gender mainstreaming policy to the above activities.

PROFILE, SKILLS AND BACKGROUND

  • University degree in law, human rights or political/social science. Other similar qualifications may also be considered. Educational background and experience in training will be a clear asset;
  • At least three years of work experience in the protection of human rights, and proven track record in conducting advocacy work towards the EU and Member States;
  • Experience in working with civil society and human rights NGOs, ideally in the Mediterranean region. Knowledge of, and experience of working on the Maghreb countries will be an asset;
  • Sound knowledge of the functioning of the EU institutions, UN mechanisms and human rights standards;
  • Ability to be clear and concise in written and oral communication, including in public; capacity to develop training material and use training techniques adapted to the NGO sector; ability to manage relations with tact and diplomacy;
  • Self-motivated, well-organised, keen attention to details, able to work independently and efficiently, including under pressure;
  • Languages: Fluency in French and English (oral and written) is imperative. Knowledge of Arabic will be considered an asset;
  • Computer literacy (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required).
